How Often to Whiten Your Teeth?

Teeth can become stained or yellowed over time due to the accumulation of food and beverage residue or prolonged tobacco use, causing a lack of confidence in social interactions. To address this issue, we need to consider common teeth whitening methods.

Why do teeth become stained and discolored?

Teeth often become stained, yellowed, and lose their brightness due to the consumption of dark-colored foods such as coffee, tea, and red wine. Carbonated drinks, sugary beverages, and foods with high acidity and food coloring can also contribute to tooth discoloration. Over time, as the tooth enamel wears down and weakens, the teeth may also take on a yellowish hue.

What is teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening is a method that changes the color of discolored teeth, helping them regain their original whiteness or even become whiter. Dental scaling also contributes to cleaner and whiter teeth, but it is not a teeth whitening method per se. It is a dental technique aimed at removing long-term accumulated tartar deposits that cannot be cleaned by regular tooth brushing.

What are the methods of teeth whitening?

Using Teeth Whitening Trays

This is a simple and easy method where the dentist takes an impression of the teeth and creates custom whitening trays that fit each individual's dental arch.

The dentist will evaluate the condition of the teeth to guide the patient in using a whitening gel with an appropriate concentration, typically ranging from 10% to 15%.

Teeth whitening at the Dentist

The teeth whitening procedure at Champion Dental Clinic consists of three steps: dental scaling, polishing, and teeth whitening.

The dentists will thoroughly clean and scale the teeth to ensure optimal whitening results.

Special materials are used to isolate the gums, preventing the whitening agent from coming into contact with and causing damage to the gums. Additionally, the lips and tongue are protected using lip retractors and tongue blocks.

Afterward, the dentist will apply a whitening agent to the teeth, typically containing 35-40% hydrogen peroxide, and activate it using a specialized LED teeth whitening light. This high-intensity light helps accelerate the whitening process.

The components in the whitening agent penetrate the tooth structure, breaking down the molecules responsible for discoloration and gradually whitening the teeth.

How Often to Whiten Your Teeth?

The timing for teeth whitening varies and is also dependent on post-whitening oral care. Individuals who maintain good oral hygiene, consume less colored food and drinks, and do not smoke will experience longer-lasting whitening results and may not need frequent whitening. However, in most cases, the teeth will stabilize in color within two weeks after whitening and maintain that color for the first six months to one year. Subsequently, the color may gradually fade over time but will still remain whiter than before the whitening treatment. Some individuals may maintain the color for up to three to four years.

Depending on the patient's preference, whitening can be performed as maintenance every six months or once a year (maintenance whitening refers to shortening the treatment phase to only one session at the dental clinic or using whitening trays at home for 1 to 2 nights).

Furthermore, the duration of teeth whitening is influenced by the quality of the whitening products used and the professional procedure employed by the dentist. When high-quality whitening agents and professional techniques are utilized, the teeth will appear brighter compared to haphazard procedures with insufficient light exposure, which can be unsafe for the patient and may not achieve the desired results.

At Champion Dental Clinic, our highly skilled dentists use state-of-the-art equipment and safe, premium-quality whitening agents to ensure a safe and fast teeth whitening process, resulting in whiter and more beautiful teeth.
